Description

This is my second image from the CDK at Deep Sky West. NGC 5985, 5982, and 5981--the Draco Triplet.

Of the three main galaxies in the group, the central elliptical galaxy, NGC 5982, may be the most interesting one in some respects. It contains a kinematically decoupled nucleus--that is, a core that rotates perpendicular to the rotation in the rest of the galaxy. As Oosterloo, Balcells, and Carter pointed out, this may be due to the merger of a small companion galaxy with the core. Further, the galaxy contains as many as 24 distinct shells, which may be the result of the kinematic dysphoria. My particular focus in capturing and processing this image was to reveal as many of those shells visually as possible. I think around seven of them are apparent in the image.
