Description

The Rosette Nebula is a large, circular H II region. It's situated in the constellation Monoceros, near the border with Canis Major. The nebula gets its name from its rose-like appearance, with petals of gas and dust illuminated by the energy of young, hot stars. Key features of the Rosette Nebula include a central cluster of stars, designated NGC 2244, which formed from the surrounding nebula. The massive stars in this cluster emit intense ultraviolet radiation that ionizes the surrounding hydrogen gas, causing it to glow. This process results in the characteristic red coloration of the nebula.
