La galaxie Messier 101, également connue sous le nom de la galaxie du Moulinet en raison de ses bras spiraux bien définis, est l'une des plus grandes et des plus lumineuses galaxies spirales visibles depuis la Terre. Située dans la constellation de la Grande Ourse, M 101 se trouve à environ 21 millions d'années-lumière de notre galaxie, la Voie lactée.

M 101 a été découverte par l'astronome français Pierre Méchain en 1781, puis ajoutée au catalogue de Charles Messier cette même année. Elle est souvent classée comme une galaxie spirale de grand design en raison de la clarté de ses bras spiraux et de sa structure bien définie. 

La taille de Messier 101 est impressionnante, avec un diamètre d'environ 170 000 années-lumière, soit près de deux fois celui de notre propre galaxie, la Voie lactée. Sa masse est estimée à environ 100 milliards de fois celle du Soleil, ce qui en fait une galaxie assez massive.
