Description

This is the first major project completed from the back yard observatory that my kids now call my "She Shed" (from State Farm commercial: Who burned down Cheryl's she shed?).

I give you M63 The Sun Flower Galaxy !!! It is my new fav galaxy.

I really love the symmetric spiral shape and variety of colors from edge to core. There is also a very distinct and dark obscuring dust lane that runs across the front side. There is one very distracting star covering the right side of the galaxy that I would love to push to the side. Just below that is another bright star with diffraction spikes. If you look just below this second star there is what appears to be some bluish grey dust. I am not sure if this is part of the galaxy as an extended arm. There is a smaller galaxy almost off the edge of the frame. Perhaps these two galaxies are interacting and this is a star stream being gravitationally pulled off M63? These are just my speculations that I will leave for the more intellectuals to answer if they are so inclined.

M63 info from Wiki: The shape or morphology of this galaxy has a classification of SAbc,[5] indicating a spiral form with no central bar feature (SA) and moderate to loosely wound arms (bc). There is a general lack of large scale continuous spiral structure in visible light, so it is considered a flocculent galaxy. However, when observed in the near infrared, a symmetric, two-arm structure is seen. Each arm wraps 150° around the galaxy and extends out to 13,000 light-years (4,000 parsecs) from the nucleus.[8]
