Description

This dusty area of the Milky Way in Ophiuchus is rich with dark nebula situated in front of the rich, star-filled central region of the galaxy.  The image is focused on Barnard 72 (LDN66), called the 'Snake Nebula', a serpentine curve of dust silhouetted against the background stars field.  Close by are several other Barnard objects, all of which extend as dusty trails from the larger Pipe Nebula.  The image was captured in August, when the Milky Way cuts through the zenith as it bends across the full sky.
