Description

M100 was one of the first galaxies that I imaged with my Celestron C6 on an AVX mount that was equipped with a Hyperstar and a ZWO Asi 224 MC camera. Back then I saw a nice galaxy structure but that was it.

Now I revisited this target with my bigger scope and better resolution per pixel. And I love the details that I was able to capture.

M100 is a grand design galaxy in Coma Berenices. Processing the image I observed that it has a very bright round core which on the other hand is exhibiting structures as well. I found information that the size of the core is only 7' x 6' - wow. It can be clearly seen how the dust lanes of the two spiral arms are originating from the core and have a nice swirl structure.

It is estimated that M100 is 56 million light years away from us. On the night sky its size is 6.1 x 5.6 archmin. Its diameter is over 130 000 light years. Visual magnitude - +9.30.

Ivan
