Description

The Jellyfish Nebula!

You're looking at the expanding debris cloud of a supernova remnant. Light from the explosion first reached earth 30,000 years ago.

From: https://chandra.harvard.edu/xray_sources/supernovas.html

When the nuclear power source at the center of the red-giant star was exhausted, the core collapsed. In less than a second, a neutron star was formed. The formation of the neutron star released an enormous amount of energy in the form of neutrinos and heat, which reversed the implosion. All but the central neutron star was blown away at speeds in excess of 50 million kilometers per hour as a thermonuclear shock wave raced through the now expanding stellar debris, fusing lighter elements into heavier ones and producing a brilliant visual outburst.

The neutron star lurking inside the Jellyfish has been confirmed to exist and its track is visible via X-ray.
