Description

I observed this object on 18 June 2015 at the at the Black Canyon of the Gunnison in Colorado using a 12” Skywatcher Dobsonian: Large dim patch. Appears to be irregular in shape with no discernible core.

I observed this object on 27 September 2016 at Okie-Tex Star Party using a 12” Skywatcher Dobsonian: At low magnification this globular cluster was a uniformly bright patch of light. At 150x it remained uniformly bright and defied showing me any details using averted vision.

NGC 6553 was the first GC found by William Herschel. It is unusually metal-rich.

I obtained the calibrated lights frames used to create the final image from Telescope Live. The frames were imaged by the CHI-1-CMOS Telescope at the El Sauce Observatory in Chile.

Shapley Sawyer Classification: XI
Distance: 19,605 LY
Type: Hub Globular
Position w.r.t. core of galaxy: About 80% along a nearly direct line between the sun and the core.
Any stars resolved: No.
Undergoing Core Collapse: No.
