Description

RCW86 is a supernova remnant located in the constellation of Circinus. It is believed to be the remnant of a supernova explosion observed by Chinese astronomers in 185 AD, making it one of the oldest documented supernovae. The remnant spans about 85 light-years in diameter and is situated approximately 8,200 light-years from Earth. RCW86 is notable for its unusually large size, which is thought to result from the interaction of the supernova shockwave with a pre-existing, dense shell of gas and dust.
