Description

The Banana Nebula is an emission nebula located around 12,000 light years away. It's a sphere of gas surrounding an extremely hot and luminous star, WR 18.

There are generally thought to be two possible explanations as to why the top of the nebula is brighter than the rest. The first is that there is a denser concentration of interstellar gas in this area compared to the rest of the nebula, while the second posits that the star WR 18 is moving in that direction, creating a piling up of gas in that direction.

This image was taken over 2 nights in Bortle 6 skies from Perth, Western Australia. Mapped to the Hubble palette (SHO) with RGB stars.
