Description

The Andromeda Galaxy (M31), is a closet barred spiral galaxy to the Milky Way at approximately 2.5 million light-years from Earth. The Andromeda Galaxy is the Milky Way’s younger larger distant cousin. At 220,000 light-years across with approximately one trillion stars, it is double the size and has between 3-10x the number of stars the Milky Way is estimated to have.

This galaxy is visible to the naked eye in the late spring through fall from a dark site; although, it looks like a big fuzzy dot. When it was originally discovered, it was thought to be a nebula, not a galaxy. If you could see the whole Andromeda Galaxy with the naked eye, its length would be almost 8 full moons across the night sky.

Fun fact, Andromeda is on a speedy collision course with our Milky Way galaxy (at 245,000 mph), but don't worry it will take another 4-5 billion years for the two galaxies to merge. So you have plenty of time to move out of the neighborhood. 😁 Due to the amount of space in Space, it is speculated that we would not even feel the effects of the two galaxies merging. M32 is the small galaxy to the upper left of M31, while M110 is the larger galaxy to the lower right. Both of these galaxies have been interfered with by M31.

This image of M31 consisted of just over 1050 individual images taken with Luminance, Red, Green, Blue, and Ha filters. The shortest exposure of 10 seconds to the longest exposure of 5 minutes. The total integration time for this image is just over 28 hours.
