Description

I spotted this in the news and forums, so thought I'd try to image it. It's a first for me!

Discovered 2 days ago by Japanese amateur astronomer Koichi Itagaki. SN2023ixf is a type II supernova, which is caused by a massive star's core collapse and subsequent explosion. At around 21 million light years away, it's the closest supernova in a decade and unusually bright, which means it can be observed with our amateur size telescopes.

Even though the sky quality was poor, it was clearly visible in single 10 second exposures. I measured it at magnitude 12.1 and it could get much brighter over the next few days!

Clear skies!

Tony.
