Description

Messier 83, the Southern Pinwheel Galaxy is one of the most beautiful galaxies visible from Earth. Its distance from Earth is about 15 Mio LJ and is also known as NGC 5236, a barred spiral galaxy in the constellation borders of Hydra and Centaurus. Since it is rather close and very bright, it can even be observed with good binoculars, depsite the fact, that it is smaller than our Milkyway. Impressive is the large amount of H2 centers which indicate active star forming regions.
