Description

M13 is the brightest globular cluster in the northern sky and was discovered in 1714 by the English astronomer Sir Edmond Halley. It is about 25,100 light years away from the sun (figures vary between 23,000 and 26,000 light years), has 300,000 times the luminosity of the sun and a diameter of 150 light years.
M13 has an apparent brightness of 5.8 mag and a medium concentration of stars. It can be seen as a foggy patch in prism binoculars, and even with the naked eye in clear skies. In a telescope with an aperture of about 10 cm or more, it can be resolved into individual stars at the edge, making it a worthwhile object for amateur astronomers. In an eight-inch telescope (20 cm aperture) many individual stars are already visible at the edge - even in bright city skies, when the limiting brightness for the naked eye is only 3.5 mag. The globular cluster can be found - best in spring or summer - on the "right quadrilateral side" of Hercules, between the stars η and ξ Her. The map of the summer sky is suitable for finding the constellation.
