I've been an amateur astronomer in England since 1980, when I was 14. For many years I was a mainly visual observer, squinting down an eyepiece trying to sketch what little I could see. I have occasionally dabbled in astrophotography, usually with more frustration than success - using firstly a film SLR, then a webcam, then an early digital camera, to take pictures of the moon, sun and planets, and, much later, an unmodified DSLR. Only since 2019 have I been attempting deep sky astrophotography using dedicated astronomy cameras and a guided telescope housed in a sliding roof observatory I had built in my back garden in 2018. Astronomy in the UK is deeply frustrating - clear skies are rare, and it doesn't even get properly dark for 3 months of the year - and light pollution gets worse year on year, with no political will to do anything about it.
