I bought my first telescope, a used C-8 with a CG-5 mount, not long before I retired in 2013; I was a public school administrator. It was rarely used because it seemed so much of a hassle to drag it all out and set it up, and I didn’t know much yet. A neighbor asked me to join several other amateurs at the local elementary school for a star party. I did and that hooked me.
Realizing I would not use it much unless I had an observatory, I built a rather crude slide-off. When I retired I decided it was time to upgrade my observatory, so built an 8 foot dome, which has been modified a few times—enlarged the shutter opening, added an insulated control cube, etc.
I have never been into the visual side and did not go down that path at all. So I am not a great star party guy, though I quite enjoy sharing views and helping folks experience the night sky.
After some not so great scope selections I finally realized I was a refractor guy, starting with a William Optics GT 102, but still using a OSC camera. Then I upgraded to a Paramount MyT and got some 12nm narrowband filters and a monochrome camera. AN MX+, many scopes and cameras and filters later, in 2023 I added a 3rd Borg 55FL 3.6 Astrograph to allow 3x the data gathering in wide field narrowband work. The plan now is to use that system or a dual WIlliam Optics FLT 132 setup for a narrower FOV. I am primarily interested in nebula and SNR imaging in narrowband.
Retired public school administrator.
Avid cyclist, design, building..and most of all nebulae astrophotography.
