Description

Sharpless 2-82 (Sh2-82) is a small yet beautiful nebula located about 3,600 light-years away in the constellation of Sagitta. It consists of glowing gas and dust, with an emission nebula surrounded by a faint reflection nebula. This combination gives Sh2-82 its appearance, where the emission nebula shines in red from ionized hydrogen, and the reflection nebula casts a soft, blue glow from nearby starlight. At its center is HD 231616, a bright star that powers the nebula's glow by emitting intense ultraviolet radiation. This radiation ionizes the gas, creating the nebula's vibrant colors.

Sh2-82 is also embedded in a dark cloud called LDN 727, a dense region where young stars are forming. The cloud's density blocks light from background stars, creating a striking contrast that highlights Sh2-82’s glow. Sh2-82 is more than just beautiful; it's a glimpse into how stars are born. Its active young stars and dynamic environment make it an important object for astronomers studying star formation. Though small, Sh2-82 captures the imagination with its glowing colors and intriguing role in the Milky Way.
