Description

After a long stretch of bad weather in Chile, I found myself in a processing slump; but, it's certainly not from a lack of data.  I have plenty of data but I've just been busy with other projects.   Even before the weather shut things down, I started working on imaging a small, bright very detailed object that I figured wouldn't require much exposure time.  Unfortunately, the seeing conditions were so consistently poor that I just couldn't get enough data good enough to achieve the detailed result that I'm after.  When the moon came up, I switched to narrow band with the idea that I could mix it with LRGB data to produce something really interesting. Finally, after the weather cleared, the seeing got better and I started getting data with FWHM between 1.2" and 1.6".   After working on it night after night, I was filling my drive with gobs of data and after numerous partial processing runs to assess the quality, my drive was a mess of processed, unprocessed, sorted, and unsorted data and I was starting to lose interest.  So, I put it aside and took a break.

At about the same time, @Wolfgang Promper posted his spectacular image of an unnamed nebula that looked pretty interesting.   He produced that image from only 3.2 hours of exposure and I noticed the it was still high in the sky so I decided to dedicate a few nights to seeing what I could do with it.  I run the same scope as Wolfgang but I run it at its native F/7 focal ratio; whereas Wolfgang uses a F/4 reducer.   I could see that this region is not super detailed and that the composition really benefits from a wider field, but I decided to just go for it to see how it might look with the narrower field from my scope.  This is a pretty dim region and my hat is off to Wolfgang for pulling such a good image out of only 3.2 hours of data.  

My image appears to be only the second image of this object to appear on AB.  It was produced using about 16 hours of data and I found it to be a moderately challenging processing project.  The color calibration was simply from what the camera produced.  I just set the black point and used the color signals from the integrated channels.  This isn't a super detailed region so I binned the data to improve the SNR of the result.  The combination of colors with dark nebula makes this a pretty interesting, rarely imaged region.  Thanks for pointing it out Wolfgang and for producing such an excellent reference image!  It was fun to see what I could do with it.  Although the colors are similar, there are slight difference that slightly change the appearance of the outer regions.  Clearly, my image picked up a bit more of the extended Ha region above the blue reflection regions.  With the narrower FOV from my scope, it's a little more difficult to judge how to best handle the background (just becoming visible in the upper left corner) but I think that it's close.
