Description

Looking like glitter spilled across black velvet, this galaxy, first spotted by astronomer E. E. Barnard in 1884, has a highly irregular and distorted structure, shredded by close encounters or collisions with other galaxies.  The regions bursting with color are filled with hot young stars (blue) and stars in the process of formation (pink).
