Description

The Phantom - Messier 74 - A Grand Design Spiral Galaxy

M74 lies about 30 million light years away in the constellation Pisces. It is home to about 100 billion stars. The bright blue spiral bands are indicative of star forming regions of the galaxy.

I have included some cropped portion of the images to show some of the smaller galaxies. One of the more interesting is LEDA 5059896 which looks like an irregular galaxy and potentially two galaxies colliding about 390 million light years away. About the same distance away is LEDA 138422 a magnificent example of a barred spiral galaxy.

Imaged from Camp Sid Girl Scout Camp, just north of Bay Minette, AL. The dark skies definitely help bring out the details of the dim target. This image is a stack of 169 five-minute exposures (14 hrs) through a UV/IR Cut filter.
