Description

Who says space is empty?  There is a lot going on in this image!  First, the galaxies.  This trio of 12-14th-magnitude galaxies in Pegasus, is about 200 million light-years away. NGC 7771 shows a tidal feature inclined to its disk and aligned with the compact companion NGC 7770, which may represernt stars stripped from the smaller galaxy. NGC 7770 shows star-forming clumps in its inner disk, in contrast to the compact nucleus of NGC 7769.  And, there are numerous, and delightful, smaller galaxies throughout the frame.

And IFN, which is close to my heart, is found throughout this region.  I wrote the 2006 article in Sky&Telescope on the topic and renamed it Integrated Flux Nebula from the original (and not too descriptive) high galactic latitude cirrus. The IFN is located at the outer reaches of our galaxy and is fluorescing (in the red and blue) due to the integrated energy (flux) of all the stars in the Milky Way.

It appears as if it's smoke coming from those interacting galaxies, who are going to collide at some point in the distant future.  Of course it's not smoke (although the dust particles of the predominent molecule, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are about the same size as particles coming off the end of a lit cigarette.)

I take responsibility for any problems with the processing here, and want to give full credit to my telescope partner Bob Fera who generously has been tutoring me on image processing.  I would not have been able to do this without his patient and skilled guidence at every step.
