NGC 6826 - Blinking Nebula in SHO

NGC 6826, known as the Blinking Nebula, is also referred to as Caldwell 15. It is a planetary nebula located in the constellation Cygnus, approximately 2,000 to 2,200 light-years from Earth. Its nickname comes from an optical illusion observed when viewed through a telescope: the nebula appears to blink, disappearing when viewed directly and reappearing with peripheral vision. It features two expanding gas shells. The fainter outer shell surrounds a brighter inner shell, which directly encircles the central star of magnitude 10. This very hot star (classified as O6fp) will eventually become a white dwarf. A notable characteristic of NGC 6826 is the presence of fast low-ionization emission regions (FLIERS), which are knots of condensed red gas that seem to move rapidly away from the central star.

C’est une nébuleuse planétaire située dans la constellation du Cygne, à environ 2 000 à 2 200 années-lumière de la Terre. Son nom de nébuleuse clignotante provient de l'illusion optique créée lorsqu'elle est observée avec un télescope : la nébuleuse semble clignoter, disparaissant lorsqu'on la regarde directement et réapparaissant en vision périphérique. Elle présente deux coquilles de gaz en expansion. La coquille extérieure plus faible entoure une coquille intérieure plus brillante, directement entourant l'étoile centrale de magnitude 10 qui est très chaude (classée O6fp) et finira par devenir une naine blanche. Une caractéristique notable de NGC 6826 est la présence de régions d'émission à faible ionisation rapide (FLIERS), des nœuds de gaz rouge condensé qui semblent s'éloigner rapidement de l'étoile centrale.
