Description

NGC 4027 — One-Armed Galaxy

This is not the most inspiring subject so I didn't go to town with lots of captures and processing.  This object is quite close to the famous Antennae Galaxies NGC 4038 and the Windblown Galaxy NGC 3981.  So it is quite understandable to overlook this target.

NGC 4027 is a barred spiral galaxy located in the constellation Corvus. It is known for its peculiar appearance, featuring a single prominent spiral arm, which makes it quite unique compared to typical spiral galaxies. This asymmetric structure is believed to have been caused by a gravitational interaction with a nearby galaxy.

The galaxy is located at a distance of approximately 75 million light-years from Earth. It has an apparent magnitude of around 11.5, making it visible with amateur telescopes under dark sky conditions. NGC 4027 has a bright central region, and its spiral arm extends outward, showcasing intricate details and stellar formations.

The interaction with another galaxy, possibly NGC 4027's companion galaxy NGC 4027A, has likely influenced its morphology and triggered star formation. Such interactions between galaxies can lead to the redistribution of gas and dust, the formation of new stars, and the creation of unique structures.
