      Description

NGC55, sometimes known as the String of Pearls Galaxy, is a barred spiral galaxy approximately 5.5 -7.5 million light-years from Earth and can be seen in the constellation Sculptor. It is recorded variously as either one of the closest galaxies to the Local Group of galaxies, possibly between the Milky Way and the Sculptor Group, or even (less often) as a member of either Group.

NGC 55 makes for a great photographic sight, even though it is viewed almost edge-on from the Earth’s perspective.

This RGB image was processed in PixInsight and very slightly augmented with Ha data; a very light touch was helpful to enhance features in the interior of the galaxy without overly distracting from the picturesque details.
