Melotte 15: Heart of the Heart

At the heart of the Heart nebula, located in Cassiopeia, lays this beautiful star cluster with emission nebula about 7500 light years away. For those who enjoy images of the Heart nebula, they can thank the stellar winds and radiation emitted by the very hot young stars in this cluster at the heart of Melotte 15. On a cosmic scale, the stars in Melotte 15 are quite young, only 1.5 million years according to Nasa's description.

This image was actually the result of "filling imaging" time for the past few nights. I was imaging M27, which sets in my backyard around 3am. Naturally no clear sky time can go to waste, so I had my planner swing to Melotte15 between 3am and 6:30 am cycling between SHO filters. I have processed this image in multiple palettes, including standard SHO, Foraxx and finally this image, which started off as a standard SHO image, but utilized the new Narrowband Normalization process by Bill Blanshan and Mike Cranfield to boost the Oiii and the Sii signal. The Sii signal boost particularly gives those interesting reddish / purplish nebulosity that I have not seen in other examples of this before in SHO. I have also uploaded the other palette attempts as revisions to this.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.

Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
