Description

First true galaxy season image and capture. As many in south Texas know, the weather has been very unfavorable this past March. Seeing conditions has been below average, and on the few clear nights we got, they happened to be under a full moon or a nearly full moon. Managed to get a couple of nights on this target the last week. The moon was rising at about 11:pm, so tried to steal some L data in the dark night before the moon rose. The next night was an unexpected clear night and also managed to gather 3 hours of Ha. First time using continuum subtraction to add LRGB data to the galaxy, and I have to say I am a big fan.

NGC 2916 is a beautiful spiral galaxy in the constellation Leo that is approximately 30 million light years away.. It is also rich in star forming regions and is decorated with numerous Ha emission regions. Exploring this image also revealed many welcome guests. In the far right corner is NGC 2916. Another spiral galaxy that is nearly 165m Ly from us. Finally there is a nice and distant group of galaxies that are probably closer to 1b ly from us in the very far left of the image.
