Description

M81 (Bode's Galaxy) and M82 (Cigar Galaxy) are about 12m light years away. They are respectively a grand design spiral galaxy and a starburst galaxy. They were both discovered in 1774 by Johann Bode. Visually M82 appears to be an irregular galaxy however examination of NIR images in 2005 revealed two symmetric spiral arms.
