Description

Sh2 161 is located in the constellation Orion so likely looked over for the more infamous M42 and other brighter nebula.

This nebula proved harder to process than I expected but when the telescope was sent back to OGS in Philadelphia after the 24" ASA600 was installed the primary mirror clearly showed the reason for the "diluted" data. The mirror was coated with a very fine dirt that gave less than  optimal data. The Ha survived far better but I worked with the data on hand which totaled 18 hours Ha, and 24 hours RGB. Had this been acquired in 2016/2017 it would be a far better image just due to the state of the mirrors.

One issue with remote imaging is lack of physical contact with the equipment so scheduling periodic inspections and having someone onsite that can service the equipment is a big help. That said, it's up to you to see that these things are done. Fortunately with the new telescope it has mirror covers for the primary mirror but is open truss.  Trying a skirt on the trusses appears to interfere with the motorized covers. We'll keep a closer eye on this going forward.
