Description

This is my first attempt to process IFN in the foreground.  I found it quite challenging, and the IFN is noisy.  So, I know I need more integration time, but the weather isn't going to cooperate this month, and by next new moon, it will be too late in the season.  I was planning at least 25 hours total, but would now have to finish collecting it next year, so I decided to go ahead and process what I have.  To add to the 12 hours I was able to collect this spring, I added a few hours of data I collected with a DSLR 4 years ago.  I'm not sure it helps with the detail in the galaxies, but it did help with the noise in the IFN.

PixInsight Workflow

Weighted Batch Pre-Processing: through the registration process
(WBPP processes everything else separately, due to the different resolutions of the cameras)

StarAlignment (Generate Drizzle Data)
LocalNormalization
ImageIntegration (Modify Drizzle Data)
DrizzleIntegration X2

Post-Processing:

DynamicBackgroundExtraction (worked better than GradientCorrector with the IFN)
BlurXterminator - Correction Only
SpectrophotometricColorCalibration w/BackgroundNeutralization
BlurXterminator
TGVDenoise
MultiScaleMedianTransform
NoiseXterminator
StarXterminator

Work starless and stars separately

starless
ArcsinhStretch
HistogramTransformation - Black Point for contrast
LocalHistogramEqualization
CurvesTransformation - Saturation

stars
ArcsinhStretch
CurvesTransformation - Saturation

PixelMath to combine stars and starless
~((~starless)*(~stars))

MorphologicalTransformation to reduce stars

Title: M81 & M82 with IFN

Description: Pulled back a bit on the stretching. Used more masks to help strike a balance between being able to see the IFN, while still showing the details in the galaxies. Still, no replacement for integration time.
