Description

Sh2-174 is a planetary nebula located in the constellation Cepheus, approximately 1,000 light-years from Earth. Unlike many planetary nebulae that have symmetrical shapes, Sh2-174 exhibits an irregular and asymmetrical structure, making it unique. This nebula is the remnant of a dying star that expelled its outer layers, leaving behind a stellar core in the form of a white dwarf.

An interesting feature of Sh2-174 is its significant displacement from the central stellar core, likely due to the progenitor star moving rapidly through space before becoming a planetary nebula. Although this nebula is much fainter compared to others, it is rich in Hydrogen Alpha (Hα) and Oxygen III (OIII) emissions, making it an object of interest for spectroscopic studies. Sh2-174 is an excellent example of the diversity and complexity of planetary nebulae in our galaxy.
