Description

Still publishing old images taken in 2022 and hope you’re not going to be scared at this one!
That ugly face looking at us is the Phantom of the Opera Nebula  (Sharpless 2-173) in constellation Cassiopeia, some 8’800 l-y away. This bright nebula by emission is faint and require long exposure to get a descent result. Here is my first try on this target during one night and I’m pretty happy the way it turned out despite the overall "pale" rendition.

This strange shape of bright and dark clouds is named after the book character of Erik from « Le Fantôme de l’Opéra » a novel by French author Gaston Leroux (1910), who is wearing a mask and « haunts » the basement of the opera house.

This area isn’t very spectacular as it has mostly dense H II regions and doesn’t show intense color variations or peculiar structures as some nebulas do around it. But it was a nice challenge at least.

Thanks for looking at my new image and clear sky everyone.
