Description

Closer than the Andromeda galaxy, Barnard's galaxy is only 1.5 million light years distant.   It's a small dwarf (ish) irregular galaxy, with active star forming regions and large HII bubbles.   The galaxy is only 7K light years in diameter, and contains on the order of 10M stars.   For comparison, that is roughly equal to the number of stars in Omega Centauri!

I've cropped this image down to showcase those HII bubbles, but a wider field shot would have shown what looks like IFN streaks (just barely visible in this image).    Tough call on which feature to highlight!
