Description

Need more data on this target! Taken from my Bortle 7 backyard, even with NB filters the integrated masters had quite a lot of noise, and the SII channel was incredibly weak.

NGC7293, the Helix Nebula, is a planetary nebula in Aquarius, 655 light years away with a 2.87 light year radius. The remnant central stellar core of the planetary nebula is on its way to becoming a white dwarf.  Stars lose up to 80% of their mass as they die, shedding gas which then becomes fluorescent, energized by the remains of the star. This is what we can observe, and their many colors indicate a wide range of elements in the ejected gas.

The Helix Nebula is also known as the "Eye of God" and the "Eye of Sauron" (my wife likes that one

Fun fact: a typical white dwarf contains the mass of a star condensed down to the size of the Earth.  Its density is 12,500lbs per tablespoon, which is about the weight of an adult African elephant
