Description

IC 5146 (Cocoon Nebula) is located about 4,000 light years away in the constellation Cygnus.
  • It spans roughly 15 light years. It's almost as wide as the Orion Nebula. Yet, it's much smaller compared to the 220,000-light-year diameter of the Andromeda Galaxy.
  • Easily visible through telescopes during late summer and early autumn.
  • Apparent magnitude of +10.0, faint for the naked eye.
  • Stellar nursery, is a dense region of gas and dust in space where new stars are born. These areas are the cosmic cradles for baby stars.
  • The bright star near its center is likely only a few hundred thousand years old.
