Description

Comet C/2020 V2 ZTF - another topic from the Namibian drawer. The presented frame, combining the comet with interesting deep-sky objects, came to me somewhat spontaneously.

After discussing with members of the expedition, we decided it was worth having it in our collections, especially since at geographic latitudes in Poland it is already very low above the horizon. On September 12, 2023, in Hakos, it was still very high, around 70 degrees.

The largest galaxy visible in the photo - NGC 908 - deserves a few words. It is a barred spiral galaxy (SBc), discovered in 1786 by William Herschel. It is located approximately 56 million light-years from Earth. NGC 908 is characterized by intense star-forming activity. Its shape - three arms, two of which have peculiar morphology - suggests potential interactions with other galaxies in the past.

Two supernovae have been observed in NGC 908: SN 1994ai (Type Ic, mag. 17) and SN 2006ce (Type Ia, mag. 12.4).

In addition to several well-visible galaxies such as NGC 899, NGC 907, or the presented NGC 908, attention should be drawn to the extraordinary richness of small and very distant objects. The described version of the photo vividly shows how fortunate we were to photograph under such good sky conditions - all galaxies from the PGC catalog are marked here and indeed visible!
