Description

Presented here is my first rendition of California Nebula (NGC1499). Although this was shot with a stock DSLR in RGB, I’m not certain this is a natural color RGB image – I’ve seen examples of more “pink” reflecting the different hydrogen emission lines and interstellar dust. This could be due to the daylight color balance in adobe camera raw; I need to stop being lazy and do a custom white balance and use rawtherapee to confirm this is the case.

Shown here is 1 hours and 40 minutes of exposure, using a 75mm aperture DSLR lens and stock DSLR camera. Specifically, a Canon 300mm f/4 at f/4 and a Canon 90D with exposure settings of 20 seconds and ISO 800. Skies were Bortle 4/5.

Manually located using viewfinder of DSLR with help from the Stellarium app for star hopping.
Tracking was via a Fornax Lighttrack ii on top of a carbon fiber tripod and fornax wedge. No guiding.

Lights were calibrated in photoshop camera raw: adobe daylight balance, camera standard profile, lens profile correction, reduction in highlights and noise reduction. Exported 16-bit TIFFs into DSS and aligned/stacked.

Rnc-color-stretch for sky removal (no air glow removal) and color preserving stretch, adjusted blackpoint to reduce color shift at lower end of signals. Had to use a very stron sretch, must be a byproduct of number of frames and low ISO, but unsure.

Photoshop for additional curve work, which was to enhance contrast and saturation. Imagesplus64 for star reduction and minor sharpening. Photoshop then used for maintaining color space and export to web.
