M20, the Trifid Nebulae is a spectacular star-forming region of the north-west part of Sagittarius. M20 has an open cluster, emission, reflection, dust and dark (Barnard 85) nebulas.
Image was captured during 2023 and 2024 from three locations: backyard (bortle 8), UBarU (traveler) (bortle 3) and Lost Maples SP (traveler) (bortle 2).

Processing:
Cropping for Lum and RGB
GraXpert for all frames except Lum
RGB are combined.
SPCC for color calibration
Blur and Noise XT for Lum and RGB
Star for Lum and RGB. RGB stars were kept, Lum stars were discarded.
Manual stretching (with HT) for RGB and Lum-starless and RGB stars.
RGB stars were stretched to middle levels. During stretching bright stars were blocked by GAME musk
Starless RGB and Lum were also stretched with help of GAME mask, which was used to block oversaturating central region of M20.
Combined RGB with Lum for LRGB.
Noise XT again
Stretching again

Simple Lum mask for LRGB
Local Histogram Equalization: Kernel radius of 40 and 150 (setting 0.3-0.4)
Multiscale-median transform for sharpness. Setting is 0.04.
From this point red and blue masks were utilized.
Curves: saturation and brightness are manipulated
Saturated and reduced RGB stars are added to this RGB image.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
