Description

M109 in Ursa Major is a barred spiral with a weak inner structure around the central bar.  It was discovered by Pierre Mechain in 1781 and catalogued by Charles Messier two year later.  M109 is the most distant object in the Messier Catalog at about 67 million light years distant.  The three larger bluish galaxies are often identified as satellite galaxies of M109.

I'm a big fan of barred spirals.  I combined the C11 and RC8 starless data, but used the RC8 stars since they appeared more interesting.

Imaged over several nights:  Mar 23; May 16, 20, 27-29, 2024.
